The other night I was laying in bed and felt a vague, pensive frustration. I was thinking about my future, and what I might make of myself. Suddenly hit with a flash of clarity about both the source of the frustration and a path to resolution, I grabbed my phone and rapped the following:
My gut says that for humanity to survive our planetary challenges, we each need to find a damn good reason to live; we’re not gonna get there with a ho-hum, 9-to-5 status quo culture of boredom. We can redeem ourselves as a species by making the most of the opportunity we have of our miraculous state as awake, self-aware beings with opposable thumbs and big hearts.

What is Personal Development anyway?

As we continue to ponder how personal development might be of strategic advantage to a company, lets begin to define our terms.
Wikipedia would have us believe that personal development “includes activities that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and potential, build human capital and facilitate employability, enhance quality of life and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations.”
Fair enough, denizens of the Wiki.
That makes Personal Development a category. The article goes on to detail the personal development industry, including fitness, beauty, meditation, life coaches, corporate communication training workshops and the whole bit.
Fair enough, empowerment consultants of the world. I’m looking for something a little more specific.
Maybe Personal Development is not the meme to which I should hitch my cart.
It must be time for a freestyle brain-jam:
So maybe Personal Evolution is closer to what I’m talking about. Ultimately, its not just about individuals, but also how groups evolve. Which segue’s nicely to next weeks post, “The Business Case for Personal Development Personal and Group Evolution”
